Eyebrow Hair Restoration

Your eyebrows play a crucial role in framing your eyes, refining your facial features, and ultimately enhancing your overall appearance. Whether you’re experiencing thinning eyebrows due to the natural aging process, hormonal changes, or overplucking, we’re here to support and educate you on all the proven treatment options for restoring your thinning brows and helping you have the eyebrows you envision.
Most people don’t realize how much eyebrows impact your appearance. Eyebrows are more than just facial features – they’re powerful beauty assets that define your facial symmetry, balance, and even expression. Well-defined eyebrows not only contribute a more youthful appearance but also create a distinct frame around your eyes, drawing attention to one of your most captivating features.
As we age, eyebrows can naturally become thinner, losing their fullness and definition. It is quite common for women to lose their eyebrow tails altogether as they move through perimenopause and finally menopause. Factors like hormonal changes and overplucking your eyebrows can exacerbate this process, leaving many individuals feeling self-conscious about their appearance. Fortunately, advancements in cosmetic procedures offer effective solutions for restoring and enhancing eyebrow fullness, helping you achieve the look you desire.
CAUSES OF EYEBROW HAIR LOSS

Eyebrow hair loss can occur due to various reasons including:

  • Genetics: You were born with naturally thin eyebrows.
  • Hormonal Changes: Fluctuations in hormone levels, particularly during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause, can impact hair growth cycles, leading to thinning or loss of eyebrow hair.
  • Overplucking: Excessive tweezing, waxing or threading of eyebrows can damage hair follicles, causing them to become weak and prone to breakage or permanent loss.
  • Natural Aging Process: As we age, the hair growth cycle slows down, resulting in decreased production of new hair follicles and thinning of existing eyebrow hair.
  • Trichotillomania: This is a psychological disorder characterized by recurrent, uncontrolled urges to pull out hair from the scalp, eyebrows and/or other parts of the body which creates noticeable hair loss. This disorder typically requires a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy and medication. Eyebrow restoration treatments cannot be successful until the underlying trichotillomania has been brought under control.

Identifying the underlying cause of eyebrow hair loss is crucial for determining the most appropriate treatment approach.

EYEBROW RESTORATION TREATMENT OPTIONS
  • Eyebrow Hair Regrowth Serums: Over the counter and prescription strength serums containing ingredients such as minoxidil or bimatoprost can stimulate eyebrow hair growth by prolonging the hair growth phase and increasing the blood flow to the follicles. These serums are not a permanent solution. They are effective for as long as you are using them as prescribed.
  • Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) and Microblading: Both of these treatment options are cosmetic procedures used for eyebrow restoration. Microblading involves the manual insertion of pigment into the skin using a handheld tool with fine needles, creating hair-like strokes to mimic the appearance of eyebrow hair. SMP, on the other hand, uses specialized equipment to deposit pigment dots on the scalp to simulate hair follicles. While both methods provide immediate results, they deliver flat or non-dimensional results which may appear less natural looking. Additionally, both microblading and SMP required periodic touch-ups over time as the pigment fades.
  • Eyebrow Transplant: The eyebrow transplant surgical procedure involves harvesting hair follicles from the back of the head in the safe donor zone and transplanting them to the eyebrow region. Similar to scalp hair transplant procedures, eyebrow transplants may be performed using surgical hair restoration techniques such as Microscopically Dissected Elliptical Excision (MDEE®) or Follicular Unit Excision and Extraction (FUE). However, at Ziering Medical our surgeons prefer utilizing MDEE® so that the donor hairs can be left long and their natural state more obvious. This allows the hair transplant surgeon to optimize the result because the natural characteristics of the donor hair can be factored into where to place those grafts in a manner that matches the shape and hair flow of the eyebrow. This visibility and artistic use of the donor hair is lost when FUE is performed because the donor hair must be shaved short. And the best part is – you get an instant sneak peek at what will be the possible final result.

Eyebrow transplantation is a meticulous and complex procedure that requires the transplantation of single hair grafts to replicate and reinforce the natural direction and orientation of eyebrow hair. Eyebrow hair changes angle, orientation, and direction multiple times along the length of the eyebrow. Typically, the hair near the nose points upward and then changes direction as it moves toward the center or arch of the eyebrow where the angles crisscross. Finally, the hair starts growing laterally and then downward toward the outer edge of the eyebrow. This intricate eyebrow hair pattern and hair growth contribute to the required artistic surgical skill of the eyebrow hair transplant surgeon and procedure to deliver an aesthetically pleasing and natural result.

On average, 250 – 500 hair grafts are transplanted into each eyebrow depending on each eyebrow transplant patient’s individual needs. A second procedure may be required to achieve your desired density. Eyebrow hair transplants are not limited to women seeking fuller brows. In fact, eyebrow hair transplants are increasing in popularity with men looking to transform their appearance with facial hair restoration procedures and our MTF transgender patients undergoing facial feminization procedures as well as our FTM transgender patients looking to thicken their brows and flatten out the arch to achieve a more masculine eyebrow and look. Eyebrow transplants may be combined with other hair transplant procedures like hairline restoration and even beard hair transplants and are the only permanent solution for treating eyebrow thinning or loss.

EYEBROW HAIR TRANSPLANT POST-OP CARE AND GROOMING

Following eyebrow transplant surgery, it’s essential to adhere to the post-operative care instructions to optimize your recovery and results. Just like scalp hair transplants, the transplanted hairs will initially fall out before regrowing around the 3-month mark. However, it may take up to 12 to 15 months for the eyebrow hair transplant mature results to become visible.

It’s important to note that the donor hair transplanted into the eyebrows will keep its same texture, personality, curl, and growth pattern which is typically different compared to the native eyebrow hair. The donor hair used for eyebrow transplantation may grow longer than the native eyebrow hair, requiring ongoing maintenance and trimming. Regular grooming will be necessary to maintain the length and shape of the eyebrow hair.

Eyebrow hair loss is more common than you think, and there are non-surgical and surgical treatment options available to restore fullness and symmetry to the eyebrows. Whether you opt for hair growth serums or eyebrow transplantation, consulting with a qualified, skilled hair transplant surgeon can help you achieve your aesthetic goals. If you are spending time daily drawing on your eyebrows or enhancing them with brow powders, fibers, or pencils, it may be time to consider an eyebrow hair transplant. We are here to help you restore your eyebrows and rediscover the beauty and confidence that framing your eyes brings.
