One example of this is the use of ACell micromatrix in conjunction with the standard methods for hair transplant to help reduce scarring, improve graft growth, and stimulate regeneration of donor follicles.
Acell is a multi-layer organic tissue matrix rich in significant vital proteins as well as multiple growth factors that are essential for hair survival and enhancement. Acell sets up a temporary scaffold at the site of transplantation and recruits Adult Stem Cells to converge at the site. These Stem Cells are then converted into Progenitor cells which are necessary for reconstructing skin and hair.
For traditional strip procedures, a sheet of ACell can be incorporated at the donor site after the graft has been removed to aid in wound healing and to prevent formation of scars. During Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) transplants, a revitalized ACell powder bathes the grafts prior to implantation and is applied in both the donor and recipient areas where it facilitates either the robust growth of hair grafts or the regrowth the follicles in the donor area.
Another such therapy, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), offers similar benefits for wound healing, growth factor, and stem cell stimulation. It can be obtained from the patient’s own blood and offers another option to optimize growth and achieve that full, natural looking head of hair.
