MDEE: The Next Stage of Hair Transplants
Ziering Medical utilizes many technologies and methods to achieve optimum hair restoration for our patients. This includes Microscopically Dissected Elliptical Excision (MDEE) or strip harvest procedures, which remains a good choice because it may deliver the highest yield of harvested hair grafts per session. There are many benefits of MDEE that allow it to continue to be competitive with Follicular Unit Excision and Extraction or FUE.Â
An Advancement Over Older Methods
This procedure is a step above older methods like hair plugs, that do not have natural-looking results. Even later micro- and mini- grafting techniques involved physicians artificially assigning the number of hairs in a hair graft. This improved upon older hair plugs, but more still had to be done to create natural looking hair transplant results.Â
The advent of innovative microscope technology designed just for hair transplant surgery, such as our Ziering Scope, allows physicians to directly visualize the follicular units themselves. They can see the naturally occurring groupings of 1 to 4 hairs and replicate them in hair transplant surgeries. Microscope assisted slivering and dissecting of donor tissue led to the procedure we now term Microscopically Dissected Elliptical Excision or MDEE.Â
MDEE or Strip Harvest Procedure is Optimal for Many Patients’ Goals
Microscopically Dissected Elliptical Excision is recommended for patients who are experiencing significant hair loss but don’t wear their hair short. As well as those who want to get the greatest aesthetic change possible in one surgery.Â
Using local anesthetic, we perform MDEE hair transplants in our state-of-the-art ORs using the most advanced technologies. A strip of tissue is removed from the donor zone and dissected into follicular units of 1 to 4 hairs using the Ziering Scope.Â
The Ziering Scope is a sophisticated instrument that enables our team to see follicular units in better detail. This allows Ziering Medical specialists to achieve more precise preparation and better preservation of donor hair. This is crucial when preparing hairs for transplantation and achieving optimum outcomes.
These follicular units go into the recipient sites created by your Ziering surgeon at the proper angle and orientation to match the agreed hair transplant design. Our treatment plans often combine surgical and non-surgical therapies. Such as medication, laser therapy and Z-Factors in order to achieve your aesthetic goals. Your Ziering hair doctors will be able to review with you which options will work best for your unique case.
MDEE Transplants Twice As Many Follicles Compared to FUE
One of the main benefits of MDEE over Follicular Unit Excision or FUE is the transplantation of large numbers of follicular units in one session. The greatest number of units transferred during an FUE treatment on average is about 2,000. Whereas a MDEE surgery may yield double the hair harvest. This is a considerable difference.Â
FUE entails shaving the entire back of a patient’s head and harvesting donor hairs one by one. In MDEE procedures, the harvested hair is from the scalp’s “sweet spot,” the area with the highest number of follicular units and the best quality of hair. This is why Follicular Unit Strip Surgery remains a popular choice for many.
Want to go for a quicker “super session” with up to 4,000 or more follicular units transferred in a single surgery? MDEE may just be for you.Â
Depending on your donor hair density and your scalp flexibility, you might be an ideal candidate and can achieve the most dramatic aesthetic transformation in a single procedure.
FUE requires a patient to shave the entire donor zone. On the other hand, MDEE only requires shaving the length and width of the donor strip. So MDEE is the recommended and preferred option for female hair transplant patients. Further, with MDEE procedures the linear excision is completely camouflaged post operatively as the hair above the linear excision is combed over the linear donor excision. Â
