Eyebrow Hair

Because of their central position on the face, eyebrows are a defining attribute for balanced facial symmetry.

Surgical precision and skill is needed to recreate the appropriate acute angle that hair exits skin as well as the directional changes that take place in the eyebrow. The hair begins pointing upward at its medial aspect where the eyebrow begins near the nose. Then the hairs angle down from the top and up from the bottom, as they converge near the midline, moving laterally across the face over the eye. (SEE DIAGRAM ABOVE)

Artistry and a keen appreciation for beauty and balance are critical in creating the appropriate dimensions, shape and arch of the eyebrows. This is based on one’s gender and individual facial proportion to craft an allusion of aesthetic symmetry. Typically, women’s eyebrows are naturally more arched whereas a man’s eyebrows are more flattened and T-shaped. This is factored into every eyebrow restoration surgery.

Ziering Surgeons perform fue eyebrow transplant makeovers weekly, exclusively using the Ziering Sneak-Peek Long Hair Transplant Technique. The process begins with your surgeon artistically crafting the shape of the transplanted eyebrow, using the patient’s facial anatomy and bone structure as a guide. Ziering Surgeons and their patients collaborate on the design and the outcome. Like traditional hair transplants, the procedure begins with the examination and removal of the donor tissue strip. The donor hair is taken from the back of the head where the hair is genetically programmed to not fall out. The salient difference is that the donor hair is not shaved short or the donor hair is left long. The length of the hair in the transplantable zone determines the length of the donor hair, meaning the donor is left at the length of the patient’s own eyebrow hair so that they can see results taking shape during their procedure and see the final outcome the same day of their eyebrow transplant. Hence the name, Sneak-Peek Long Hair Transplant. Next, the donor hair is dissected under Ziering Scopes into single hair grafts.

An eyebrow transplant surgery requires 150 – 300 or more hairs per eyebrow depending on the degree of loss and the eyebrow hair transplant design. Recipient sites are created with special attention given to the angle, orientation and direction of each site. An additional benefit of using long hair grafts for the eyebrow restoration procedure is that it aids in making the recipient sites at more exacting angles because the full characteristics of each hair is discernable. It also aids in graft placement, because we can rotate each hair more intentionally to enhance the architecture of the new eyebrow arch based on the personality of each hair. Employing this eyebrow hair transplant technique, gives the surgeon a more long range vision or a glimpse of the completed eyebrows, allowing the best use of the donor hair in all its natural glory. It provides more control in the eyebrow hair transplant surgical process which elevates the artistic level of the procedure and ultimately gives the patient a superior final outcome.

Similar to the traditional hair transplant procedures, the newly transplanted hair will fall out after several weeks as the follicle enters the resting or telogen phase. Then the eyebrow hair will grow back in the set design of the eyebrow restoration procedure during the growth or anagen phase. Transplanted eyebrows require grooming and maintenance as they are scalp hairs which are programmed to grow longer than your normal eyebrow hair. We offer an eyebrow grooming kit to our eyebrow hair transplant patients for purchase to aid in the ongoing care of their restored eyebrows. Most patients are back to their daily lifestyle routines in 3 – 4 days.

An eyebrow makeover has tremendous impact on the overall face. Women, in general, are becoming an increasing segment of our patient population and the eyebrow replacement surgery is the fastest grow hair restoration sub specialty in our practice.

About 4 million people each year face the reality that their eyebrow hair is thinning. As a result they have bald spots in their brows. For many women, drawing on their eyebrows becomes a burdensome morning ritual. Hair loss is a confidence killer regardless if it’s your receding hairline or your disappearing or non-existent eyebrows which is why people turn to different forms of eyebrow restoration.

When eyebrow hair loss becomes a beauty flaw, eyebrow transplants are the most natural, low maintenance solution available to both women and men. It may come as a surprise, but anyone can have “bald spots” in their eyebrows. Eyebrow hair loss does not gender discriminate. While the eyebrow hair transplant is a common procedure with women, more and more men are having them.

The most common cause of eyebrow hair loss in women is over-plucking which over a period of time permanently damages the hair follicle creating scar tissue and complete loss of hair growth. Another cause is the natural aging process where patients in their 50’s and 60’s begin to experience hair thinning even in their eyebrow area. While some patients are looking to have eyebrow transplant surgery just to enhance their facial features, others are seeking reconstructive eyebrow replacement for eyebrow bald spots caused by trauma from childhood accidents or sports-related injuries as well as burns and hair loss caused by medical treatments like radiation and chemotherapy. For others, eyebrow hair loss may be genetic and the eyebrows are very thin, have small bald spots throughout and/or the eyebrows are non-existent. Loss of eyebrow hair can also be associated with Alopecia Areata and other systemic diseases such as thyroid disorders. Eyebrow replacement surgery is often performed to soften the flat and stark appearance of tattooed eyebrows, restoring the natural three dimensional appearances of your eyebrows and reanimating the face.

“I’ve been a brow artist so I truly understand the power of a beautiful brow, and the way they can enhance facial features. When I heard about eyebrow transplants, I knew it would probably be right for me as my hereditary eyebrows were sparse and I made them even thinner from millennial over-plucking. Additionally, they were much lower in growth pattern than I wanted. I felt my procedure was a little Casanova as I requested more grafts than usual. I was going for that Cara Delavigne/ Gigi Hadid, never-been-plucked level of thick and I had some very scanty brows in place.

Dr Ziering and his team were able to transform the shape of my eyebrows from thin to full, and I really like the way they’ve been restored. For those who don’t like to wear makeup and feel it’s a hassle, I think this procedure is still a huge improvement- I’m just a perfectionist and I personally like the look of a little makeup.

Some advice: It’s important to understand that you may expect your after to look like an eyebrow model, but to get your eyebrows to look on point/peak/fleak you have to trim and style them. I still use a little pencil or powder to further artistically define their shape, yet I no longer feel like I always have to be wearing pencil to avoid looking sickly. Learning to trim and style transplanted brows can be tricky if you’re not a makeup pro, so I would say having a brow stylist who’s familiar with transplants to show how you how, can go very far.

I would do this procedure ten times over again and I really believe it’s one of the most underrated out there. If you want a Hollywood beauty secret to great eyebrows, this is it!”
