What Are The Signs That You Need Hormone Replacement Therapy for Hair Loss

For optimal results, hair restoration treatments have to be tailored to each patient’s specific needs. This is why at Ziering Medical, we provide individualized treatments to best address the root causes behind each patient’s hair loss. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is one of these. An advanced treatment leveraging developments in endocrinology to combat hair loss and restore natural hairlines, it is particularly suited to dealing with hair loss caused by hormonal issues such as menopause and andropause. HRT is a non-surgical treatment and Dr. Craig Ziering supported its use in hair restoration early on. Now he serves as an advisor to Physically Male – Ziering Medical’s HRT partner.

Hormones and Hair Loss

As mentioned above, during the transitional years of menopause and andropause the decreasing hormone levels in men and women can contribute to shortened hair follicle growth phase. This results in follicles shrinking and reducing the amount of hairs visible on the scalp. If your doctor determines hormone replacement is a good course of action, an individualized treatment plan will be formulated tailored to your age, gender, severity of hair loss and other factors.

Male Pattern Baldness and Hormones

Hair loss has four main factors behind it, namely hormone levels, genes, age and stress. Lifestyle, such as diet, environment, sleep patterns, can also contribute to hair loss. Male pattern baldness is often caused by genetic factors and in such cases it is called androgenic alopecia or androgenetic alopecia.

Hair loss can also be a sign of andropause (the male equivalent of menopause) when caused by age hormone production drops. Decreased testosterone can lead to hair loss and also growth of hair in other parts of the body such as the ears. Moreover, hormones such as DHT or dihydrotestosterone, a byproduct of testosterone, also shrinks hair follicles and when DHT is suppressed follicles can continue functioning normally.

Female Hair Loss and Hormones

For most women and men, hair loss is caused most often by androgenic alopecia; when genetic factors cause a slowdown in hair growth. For some women, low thyroid activity or hypothyroidism can contribute to hair loss as well, along with other symptoms similar to menopause. This can be addressed with bioidentical hormones that can replace the thyroid hormones the body is insufficiently producing.

Female hair loss can also accompany menopause, so thinning hair and bald spots will add to an array of uncomfortable symptoms such as:

  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Moodiness
  • Loss of libido

The arrival of menopause is also accompanied by a drop in progesterone levels, causing estrogen dominance that in turn can result in excessive hair shedding and ultimately hair loss.

Is HRT What You Need?

Hormone replacement has effects beyond the hairline. HRT is capable of bringing the body back into optimal hormonal balance as well, making people look and feel younger. By addressing hormonal issues, HRT can restore patients’ overall sense of wellness.

HRT can help deal with issues such as:

  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Depression
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Low libido
  • Muscle loss
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Hot flashes

In short, improving hairlines is just one of the many benefits offered by HRT.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy

Also known as TRT, this type of hormone replacement is geared for men over the age of 30 dealing with the symptoms of testosterone deficiency. TRT provides another source of the testosterone that the body is now insufficiently producing, helping it reach optimum levels, thus promoting health, wellness and making patients look and feel younger.

TRT deals with symptoms of testosterone deficiency such as:

  • Weight gain
  • Loss of muscle
  • Loss of concentration
  • Fatigue
  • Lowered libido

Starting HRT

For patients who require hormone replacement therapy, Ziering Medical will schedule their consultation with Physical Male. A licensed medical assistant from Physical Male will visit patients at a date, time, and location of their choosing. The medical assistant will gather basic medical information and a blood sample, with the entire visit amounting to less than 30 minutes. The information is then processed confidentially and after a doctor reviews the medical data, a personal telemedicine appointment will be scheduled.

After a follow-up telemedicine appointment with a personally assigned doctor, each patient will then discuss with their personal physician the health assessment findings and develop a personal HRT plan tailored to their specific needs.
