Why you should consult a hair transplant surgeon
These days, more and more people are choosing to get hair transplants from skilled hair surgeons. There are several types of procedures from which to choose, and each one can provide patients with the confidence they need to feel great about their hair and personal appearance again.
There are several reasons why hair loss occurs outside of what most people consider hair loss due to genetics. Medicines used for depression or high blood pressure often have hair loss as a side effect. Hair loss can also be a result of heart problems or gout. For individuals who undergo radiation or chemotherapy treatments, hair loss is a common symptom. Loss of hair can also be a sign that the thyroid is not functioning correctly and can occur as a side effect of certain thyroid medications. Certain infections, such as ringworm in the scalp, can also result in severe hair loss or prevent the hair from growing at a reasonable rate.
Hormonal changes can also lead to hair loss for men and women. Men whose levels of testosterone start to decrease because of age, sickness or weight gain may experience hair loss. Women on birth control pills may notice that their hair is shedding more than usual or not thriving. Hair loss can also be genetic for both men and women.
To be a good candidate for hair-loss surgery, patients must have a history of pattern baldness without underlying scarring alopecia, as well as available donor hair to harvest. Individuals who have lost hair because of injury to the scalp may also benefit from hair transplant surgery.
Hair transplant surgery, is an outpatient procedure in which two methods to harvest your donor hair are used, FUT or FUE. FUT hair transplant surgery (Follicular Unit Transplantation) is performed using local anesthetic where a thin strip of tissue is removed from the back of your head where the hair is genetically programmed to last for life. Next, the donor strip is slivered and dissected under the Ziering microscope, creating individual follicular units of 1 – 4 hair grafts. Your expert hair surgeon creates recipient sites according the hair transplant design. The last step of the hair transplant surgery entails the surgical tech team gently and meticulously placing your hair grafts into the recipient sites. FUT is considered the “Gold Standard” in hair transplant surgery. However, if you intend to wear your hair very short, you may consider FUE (Follicular Unit Excision). FUE hair transplant surgery is the method of harvesting your donor one follicular unit at a time. Just like FUT procedures, your surgeon creates the recipient sites and the harvested follicular units are transplanted into your balding and thinning areas. FUE is performed manually by hand with the SAFE System or robotically with the ARTAS Robotic System.
One of the most significant advantages to having a hair surgeon perform hair-loss surgery is that the surgeon has dedicated their career to perfecting their skills and outcomes with hair transplant surgery. This is all Ziering surgeons do; they do not perform other cosmetic procedures. They are experts in this very specific field of medicine. He or she knows how hair grows and the factors that will facilitate or inhibit hair growth. Hair transplant surgeons are best able to assess your finite donor hair and create surgical plans that maximize the use of your available donor hair. Qualified hair surgeons also know the hair-growth patterns for people based on ethnicity and hair type and can provide patients with information that will let them know what to expect during each phase of the hair transplantation process. Ziering surgeons are experts when it comes to hair transplants, and their artistic skills will ensure each patient is happy with the results immediately after surgery and in the months and years that follow. Cosmetic surgeons who are performing many different types of procedures typically do not have the same vast surgical hair restoration experience and will not be as focused on all aspects of the hair transplant procedure which can lead to compromised results. Many of these cosmetic surgeons rely on the Tech Team to perform the procedure which is unethical and illegal. With the introduction of new technology like the ARTAS Robotic System and various motorized manual devices for harvesting donor hair, hair transplant surgery has become an “add-on” procedure at cosmetic practices. Keep in mind that there are many steps to the hair transplant procedure. Advanced technology does not replace the significance of excellent hairline design skills and management of the finite donor hair. Great surgical outcomes are the result of pairing the right procedure, FUT or FUE, with the right patient, employing the most advanced technology used by an experienced hair surgeon.
The results of the hair transplant look and feel natural, and it won’t be evident that any work has been done. All the hair blends well with together.
