Having practiced medicine for 25 years – the past 9 having been devoted exclusively to the medical and surgical treatment of hair loss – I can state assuredly that I have heard quite a litany of postulated causes and proposed treatments for this common disorder which besets all ages, colors and creeds.
One feature of the patient with hair loss that continues to confound me is the willingness of people to seek counsel and take direction from individuals without an iota of medical training – classically personified in my specialty by the hairdresser- often in the process rather blithely disregarding my advice if it runs at all counter to their ‘expert’s’ say on the matter.
Now granted hair loss has never been responsible for the literal demise of anyone so a worse case scenario is progression of loss in a setting where this eventuality was avoidable – so my ego can take the jolt and my conscience stay clear – but really ??? really ???
So in my never ending quest to educate the masses, I present my ABC’s of hair loss management:
Abdicate to those who know. You wouldn’t think of seeking consultation from a urologist and then take his recommendations to your plumber for a second opinion any more than you would weigh your fitness trainer’s opinion on the state of your cardiac muscle and the need for pharmacological or surgical intervention against that rendered by your cardiologist.
Be prepared for a program of management that entails lifelong therapy with medications that have a proven track record of efficacy and safety. Understand that any and all other hair tonics and potions are not reasonable substitutes for finasteride (Propecia) and minoxidil.
Consider surgical hair transplantation to restore your lost ranks. It is the only predictable means of replacing hair lost thru genetic patterned loss or other means and in capable hands like ours at Ziering Medical the results are uniformly acknowledged as natural looking by even the most critical reviewers and acclaimed by most to be nothing short of amazing.
